ABOUT US
The Abacus Art was established in 2000 with a mission to collect, preserve and present works of art that are important reflections of the development of South East Asian culture and society.

Collection
Abacus Art focuses on the articulation and representation of South East Asian cultures and societies over the past two centuries. Though the history of South East Asian art traces its roots back to the very birth of civilization in this region, and has a strong tradition in ethnic artisanship that survives to the present day, Abacus Art focused on three main periods, namely:

Colonial Art
The Colonial Period in South East Asian art began as the Western powers began colonizing the region. The Portuguese were the first Western colonial power in South East Asia, establishing themselves in Malacca, as early as the 16th century.

Modern Art
The Modern Art period in South East Asia began as the colonial powers left the region during or after World War II. Independence in many countries spurred artistic communities that were trained in the Western artistic tradition but were eager to break new ground.

Contemporary Art
The Contemporary Period dates from the 1980s until the present. In this period artists explored freely techniques and media in their works, using bright colors and strongly symbolic imagery.
