Jamie Tan & Jamie Teo

2021

Jamie Tan and Jamie Teo first met in LASALLE during their school days. After a few years of separate practice, they collaborated on a joint piece, Offline Colour, exhibited late 2020 at a joint exhibition at Art Porters Gallery. 13 artworks from the exhibition are reproduced for this calendar; Offline Colour is a journey to slow down, to relearn to see tonal existence in non-digital colours and to become aware of how we perceive colour subjectively and objectively through abstract paintings. In January 2021, Jamie and Jamie are presenting a triptych in response to the curated theme of hyper-horizon at the prestigious S.E.A. Focus 2021.

Jamie Tan

b. 1990, Singapore

Jamie Tan's paintings are an exploration of colours, interpreted through their juxtaposition in his iconic rectangular frames, which are at once happy and playful, and yet provide a sense of depth, mystery and unease. For Jamie, colours embody the spirit of freedom, where they seemingly expand, recede and overlap within their own boundaries. In his artworks, Tan explores the interaction of colours and how we perceive them — colours seem static by themselves but enter a transformative, ever-shifting state when relative to their surroundings. His experiments with the nuance of hues and repetitive but shifting lines create both stillness and movement, and propel the viewer though the center of each canvas.

Tan received his BA (First class honours) in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, awarded by Goldsmith University of London, in 2017. Since his graduation, Tan has participated in several group exhibitions and regional art fairs in Malaysia and Singapore, such as Art Stage Singapore 2018, Art Expo Malaysia 2017 and 2018. Tan held solo exhibitions, Planes of Paradise, and Takes Two to Tango at TAKSU Gallery, respectively in Kuala Lumpur in 2018 and Singapore in 2019. In 2020, Tan took part in the duo exhibition Offline Colour together with Jamie Teo at Art Porters Gallery.

Jamie Teo

b. 1996, Singapore

Jamie Teo's paintings embody a sense of tension that lingers between the stillness and phenomenal movement where colours begin to change the longer you look at them. She dances on the canvas, using a broad palate of hues with luscious names such as Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White, Cinnabar Green, Naples Rose and Manganese Violet. She invites viewers to experience a different approach to seeing by meticulously blending colours to both create and investigate their movement and ambiguous outcomes. Areas of unique, impulsive textured brushstrokes are built up from the rigid process of pushing thick accumulated paint back and forth. This juxtaposition from the smooth and flat gradient surface captures fleeting moments where colours merge and break apart from each other within an ever-changing field of stillness, evoking a visual interaction between the viewer and the work, seeing and experiencing an intangible in-between.

Teo graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore, with a BA (First class honours) in Fine Arts awarded by Goldsmith University of London in 2018. In that same year, Teo won the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year (Silver) award. Teo has also exhibited in multiple group shows in Qatar, Malaysia, Jakarta and Singapore including the inaugural S.E.A. Focus showcase and Art Jakarta in 2019. Her first solo exhibition Shifting Stillness at UOB Art Gallery that year was met with enthusiastic responses and in 2020, Teo presented her first joint exhibition Offline Colour at Art Porters Gallery together with Jamie Tan.
