Phai, Bui-Xuan (b. Hanoi, Vietnam, 1920 - 1988)

One of the most remarkable and charming figures of Vietnam Modern art, Phai graduated from Ecole de Beaux Arts Indochine in Hanoi in 1945. He has been able to convey the atmosphere of Hanoi in simple lines but the lines carry a message of deeper understanding. Living in a time when artists and intellectuals were closely supervised by the authorities, he stubbornly refused to paint happy faces of workers and soldiers.

The glory and fame that came at a very late stage of his life have been sustained and carried on until the present.
